BODY & CONTEXT ( reflection )

At the end of this course, a lot of things that I have learnt  from this class. Mainly understanding about how the society, artists and ourselves think during different situations. How to deal with different problems which shouldn't lead to much of conflicts. I have learnt that a body can be anything according your interpretation, it can be scientific or imaginative. All of this through art and design like wall painting and sculpture making. Also, art is not always have to be beautiful.

BODY AND CONTEXT (14th & 15th Oct)

On Wednesday, we continued with the sculpture. We started with body where we used empty cement bags which were dipped in concrete. These were placed over the "shoulder". We did this on both side. Then using the wire mesh, the head structure was made. The difficult part was placing the head on the shoulder. It kept on moving, so we asked our facilitator Narendra for help. A stick was used to make the head still n clay was used for making facial structure. Concrete mixture was used for one last coating. And we were done!
Today all of us had to come only at 10 in the morning to have a discussion. Narendra brought the same topic which he asked us at the beginning,"What is a body?".  A body has a physical structure with an identity. It also has no boundaries since they are connected to each other. When the word choices came up, a conflict was arising. Some were saying there should be individualism and accepting other people's choices and others saying to adjust to the society and being sensitive. We all need to be both depending upon the situation. Then we talked leadership, Here also a leader should be democratic as well as autocratic. A body should be concussion about the surroundings.

BODY AND CONTEXT ( 8th, and 9th Oct)

On Thursday we  all looked at the different sculptors and art styles for the group assignment. Few of them were: Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Ai Weiwei,  Jeff Koons, Ramkin Baji, Gond art, Bundi, Kalamari. We discussed  about artists/sculptors who reject realism. Most artist wanted to be unique in their Art. Some just wanted to escape from reality or to express their feelings and thoughts.
Then we did this activity where we need to find what you/others think of  about your body. so we all drew a graph where the y axis is realistic and x axis is imaginative. After that we have to write all the words that you think is related to body and then connect them if they have connection. Note down the number of connections in the descending order and group they if they have the same number. Now write a one sentence each from those word. These are your/ others thoughts related to body. Cool right?
We formed into our groups and straight a way started the assignment. Our assignment was to make a human sculpture with the reference of Henry Moorn and Anish Kapoor.
First we bought 5 meter long of wire mesh and some thin wires. We got some rusted iron rods and other metal items from our facilitator, Narendra. He showed us how to bend the rod. We tried to bend it but that wasn't happening. It was bit hard to do it. So, we just made the basic structure. Then on friday we made mud mix and we put it on the bottom part to give support as well as the base to make the curve/wave.Then we put the cement mix on top of it. Another layer of cement mix will be put on next week.

BODY AND CONTEXT (30th sept and 1t oct)

I missed few classes at the beginning since I was sick. I didn't know what the class was about.
The class started with a lot of questions like How is an Indian depicted? who defines your beauty? Most of everyone said that Indians are wheatish/brown color, men having 5'5 and 5'3 (average height) and the clothes they wear depends upon the state, culture and religion. And for beauty, its yourself who defines beauty but most people especially girls they think about others.
Then we did activity which is to check for the word beauty through image search. We came to know that all the pictures showed were people with fair skin, blonde/brunette hair and green/blue eyes. This was a typical thinking of how beauty should be.
The afternoon session was making a wall art where the theme was Indian men and women. Lucky this was a group work. So, we planned out how its going be and then start doing on the wall. We chose to do on the one of the pillars. This wall art was mixed media where we used paints, ribbons, cloth, actual bindi and sequins. This was really fun to do and I'm actually proud and happy with the outcome.
